He attended Baptist Day School, Ijagbo before the SIM / ECWA Teachers college where he has his Grade II Teachers’ Certificate in 1957. He was in School of Education, University of Leicester, England in 1961 to 1963 where he had his U.K. Certificate in Education. He had B. A. Major in English from Gordon College, Wenham, Mass, U.S.A. He attended Virginia Polytechnics, Institute and State University, Blacksburg Virginia, U.S.A. between April 1973 and June 1974 to obtain Master degree in Arts.
Chief I. O. Ajayi was a teacher in ECWA Primary School, Oke- Ode 1956-1958. ECWA Primary School, Oro-Ago in 1959. He was Headmaster ECWA Senior Primary School, Takau-Kafanchan between 1960 -1961. He became the Assistant Education Officer at Bida Teachers’ College in 1963 through to 1966 and Government Women Training Centre, Abeokuta from 1967 to1969. He works as Education Officer I at Government Technical Training School Ilorin in 1970 and Ilorin Teachers’ College in 1974. He was principal of Government Secondary School, Molete between 1974 and 1977. He was Zonal Inspector of Education Irepodun / Ifelodun Local Government Area 1977 to 1979. He was the Principal of Oyun Baptist High School, Ijagbo 1980 -1981 and 1982-1985 and also Baptist Grammar School, Isanlu Isin 1981-1982.
He held several political and religious assignment which included; Treasurer, Nigeria Union of Teachers Oyun zone 1980-1981, Deputy Chairman Omu-Aran zonal ANCOPSS 1981 -1982 and Chairman Oyun zonal ANCOPSS 1983-1985. He won special honour of all Nigeria Principals of Secondary Schools Medallion and special Certificate of Honour 1988. In year 2000 he was honoured with a Chieftancy title of Atunluse of Ijagbo land.

Chief I. O. Ajayi was honoured with an award of Excellence in recognition of his contribution to the development, discipline and humanitarian services rendered as Principal of OBHS Ijagbo by the Old Student on 12th April 2007 at the 2nd AGM in Ilorin.
